ENROLLING IN COVERAGE

Prior to the start of classes of their first term—and again each fall—students should contact the Bursar's Office, located on the first floor of the Resource Center Building (433 Bolivar Street). At that time, they are required to either:

(a) Purchase insurance coverage from BCBSLA through LSUHSC-NO, or

(b) Provide evidence of coverage from another provider in order to support a waiver to opt-out of BCBSLA coverage.

Students who opt out of BCBSLA coverage will still be assessed the required premium for needlestick benefits

When enrolling in coverage, students may be asked to provide BCBSLA with proof of prior insurance from their previous carrier.

By default, when a new academic year begins, students will retain the same insurance coverage they had during the prior academic year. There are two opportunities to make changes to coverage:

1) Before the start of classes each term - Students who wish to make changes to their coverage should contact the Bursar’s Office in advance to process those updates.

2) After classes begin - Students who experience a qualifying event (such as involuntary loss of coverage under another plan, marriage, or the birth or adoption of a child) have 31 days to notify the Bursar’s Office and adjust their coverage.

    • If changes in coverage due to a qualifying event are made on or before the fifteenth day of the month, the student will be enrolled effective the first day of that same month and charged a prorated premium beginning with that date.
    • If changes in coverage due to a qualifying event are made on or after the sixteenth day of the month, the student will be enrolled effective the first day of the following month and charged a prorated premium beginning with that date.

When changes are made, the Bursar's Office will collect any premiums due to issue any applicable refunds to the student.

When making changes to their coverage, students may be asked to provide BCBSLA with proof of prior insurance from their previous carrier.

Students may enroll eligible dependents (spouses and children) in medical coverage by contacting our local partner, Gallagher Benefit Services, at lsu.hsc.gbs@ajg.com or 225-906-1227. Premium costs vary based on each dependent’s age.

Dependents must be enrolled within 30 days of the effective date of coverage for the student’s specific program. At the time of enrollment, the total premium due through the end of the current academic term must be paid in full. If enrollment does not occur within the initial 30 day window, students will only be allowed to enroll dependents within 31 days of an involuntary loss of coverage or another qualifying life event.

Residents, Fellows, and House Officers may contact our local partner, Gallagher Benefit Services, at lsu.hsc.gbs@ajg.com or 225-906-1280 to enroll in coverage for the medical or needlestick plans.
